A Mother’s Gift to Anatomy: A woman in labor was hit & killed by a carriage as she walked in front of the San Carlos Royal College of Surgery, in 18th-century Madrid.
Nobody knew her name or claimed her body with unborn child.
This was a windfall for surgeons in training. Body handlers applied mud then created & filled a mold with wax. Today it remains the most striking sculpture at the Complutense University School of Medicine.
